About
The “Connect Barracks Row” project is a student-led Studio effort of the University of Maryland at College Park. Every semester, a class of Master’s level Urban Planning students helps a community deal with unique challenges or opportunities, both in the Washington, DC area and abroad. This Fall, we’re working with Barracks Row Main Street on a project to help develop alternative plans to unify the areas north and south of the Southeast Freeway on 8th Street SE in Capitol Hill. Over the last ten years, Barracks Row—or 8th Street SE—has experienced a renaissance, with dozens of new restaurants and stores opening, helped by streetscape improvements like tree plantings, sidewalk improvements, and street lamps. Unfortunately, the area south of Interstate 295 has not benefited from the same level of improvement, despite its critical location as a linkage between Capitol Hill and the Riverfront District, which is rapidly developing due to the new Nationals’ stadium and new federal offices in the area. Interested in helping to shape the future of Barracks Row? Let us know what you think development south of the freeway should look like by filling out a survey or by e-mailing us. The product of this Studio project will be several alternative development plans for the Barracks Row south of the Southeast Freeway, which will be presented to the community in early December at an open meeting.
